Fair enough Jeremy but his arguments are flawed as his replies are what I would expect of a blackhatter.

Firstly, it was PPP that started hurling the accusations so dont be defending your respected member if he cant control his arrogance & point blank accusations of others cheating the system, while ignoring their reasoning. It should have been a valuable thread but your well respected member came in with his bitchiness, which as you can see, many members are growing accustomed to. let him try a little harder next time before you jump in.

It's my forum, he's my friend. I'll jump in whenever I want. If this thread is going to be a war, I'd rather see it be a war of ideas on cookies, not a bunch of name calling and false accusations. People disagree here all the time about lots of different issues. That is fine, and encouraged.

I not censoring shit or taking a side either, Likewise I don't care what anyone wants to say, carry on. I am just correcting your accusations of black hat or cookie stuffing in this instance as I know that this is 100% false. Every other member that has personal correspondence with PPP would also agree.

That's the end of my discussion on this and should be the end of anyone else's. Can we just get this thread back on track now.

I tried to be objective, and provided a statistical analysis of PPP's arguments, which nobody probably will bother to read....cause it is too long.

PPP is absolutely right in some of the things he says, and probably wrong in other ways.

But I can scarcely feel sorry for him being attacked personally, although I think edmc was rude also....and now I am going to join in...and be rude, if that is how anybody wants to interpret it.

You have defended PPP's integrity, but what about the outright attack on the noobie OP's integrity in PPP's response, in which he accused the guy of cheating and helping various scam artists to cheat the poor starving Poker rooms?

As Ye sew, so shall ye Reap.

The thread was derailed at that point, and beyond, as PPP continued to put words in the guy's mouth and suggest that the guy was misleading everybody and misrepresenting his purpose in getting cookies deleted.

I don't care how much his opinion is respected anywhere else, he will get the respect/disrespect his comments to others in this forum warrant....

PPP is the one who started being rude and obnoxious and accusatory first.
When he basically accused edmc of being drunk - rather than either ignoring or responding to the arguments - Dave commented that it seemed like a low blow.

For that, Dave was told he was being rude and obnoxious.
Dave has a right to his opinion, even if he is not a real Molson's Canadian
and being critical of PPP is not rude and obnoxious in and of itself.

But PPP, with his overinflated ego, obviously cannot see why anybody would ever disagree with him - on anything.

PPP is not the Pope, nor the Queen, nor anybody else whose identity is well known, but he acts like someone who thinks that people should bow down and agree just because he insults them and accuses them of tunnel-vision.

He acts like he knows everything, and everybody else is just soooo ignorant, and then it turns out he does not even know what cookie-stuffing is all about (or so he says).

But that does not stop him from uttering pompous pronouncements about how righteous he is, and how everybody else who does not agree is either an idiot or a scumbag scam artist.

He cannot see the flaws in his own thinking, but when you prove him wrong, he changes the context of the discussion and tries to claim he was arguing about something else.

Just like here, where when the OP swore he was just interested in making sure deserving Affiliates got credited, suddenly PPP is claiming that the argument is actually all about how telling customers to clear cookies is going to cost the Poker rooms money.

Huh? How is that again?

Why, by telling people to clear their cookies, OP is aiding and abetting the scam artists who try to get bonuses for second or third signups (or whatever).

This is like one of the dumbest things I have heard lately.
The scam artists who are trying to score extra bonuses are hardly likely to have heard of clearing cookies for the first time on OP's website.

If they are truly that unsophisticated, then the Poker Rooms surely do not need any affiliates' help in catching idiots like that.

PPP even admitted - on his own - that Poker Rooms use more than just those cookies to track such things.....DOH!!!!

For your information, Mr. Know-it- all, there are changes made to the registry that clearing cookies will not undo....so clearing cookies for making sure you get credit is *not* going to damage the poker rooms by rendering them defenseless against the scam artists.

The poker rooms have highly sophisticated anti-fraud programs, just like they can tell who is using bots and bot-facilitating software on their computers. They can tell when a computer has contacted their site through other identification mechanisms....not just IP matching, but deeper stuff....at the machine level.

In any case, the cookies are re-inserted as soon as anybody visits the site again.

So, if they have other techniques available to protect themselves, then maybe it is not such a treasonous thing *after all* to ask somebody to clear their cookies?

So, maybe all this was a red herring, much ado about nothing, a mountain made out of a mole-hill?

Maybe it was all so PPP could cover up his own ignorant rude comments, and he had to find some other reason for attacking the OP???

And maybe the onus should not always be on affiliates to bear the responsibility of protecting the Poker Rooms....who hardly have a reputation for making sure that *their* business procedures always take into consideration the welfare of affiliates.

It does not matter how many times you point out PPP's inconsistencies of logic to him....he refuses to see his own contradictions.

The truth is quite clear: Big affiliates - with their huge numbers of daily hits - have a very small probability of encountering visitors who have already been to a small site before visiting the big site.

It really does not happen nearly as often as the reverse....where a small site has a much higher probability of getting a visitor who has already been to a big site.

For the big affiliates, losing RMPs in this manners is a statistically insignificant blip in their income.

For small affiliates, it can be a huge bite that they cannot afford.

Under the right circumstances, small affiliates can benefit by their visitors going on and signing up through a Big site's portals....IF - and only if - the big site does not have their own bonus code that overrides cookies.

However, I would like to see some sort of statistical analysis of just how often the "right circumstances" truly occur.

If big sites have their own Bonus Codes, and small sites do not, the small sites are at a tremendous *relative* disadvantage.

Smaller affiliates need to ask clients to clear their cookies out of *self-defense*.

And PPP is full of shite when he accuses them of being crooks, or of stealing from honest affiliates, just because they recommend that clients clear their cookies.

Several posters have pointed out that it is quite common and normal for people to clean out their cookies, and even some poker rooms tell affiliates and players alike to try doing it.

PPP may have all the integrity in the world when it comes to his Poker sites...I wish to hell I knew him and could learn from him....but his arguments in *this* forum, now and in the past, have lacked intellectual integrity.

He is much too quick to condemn other posters and ridicule their points of view.

He is pompous, and self-righteous. OK, so am I....and maybe that is why he bugs me so much.

However, there is a major difference.

PPP is needlessly mean-spirited.

By all means, next time any of you see *me* going out of my way to attack a new poster and utter unfair accusations, *please* call me on it.
I think it will improve the forum.

Just like PPP could improve the forum by acting as smart as he thinks he is.

That's it, go to your damned rooms until you can behave nicely! (well .. it works when all the kiddies are screaming chaotically :P)

I am nosy by nature, and a mom, so I HAVE to say that you guys have been acting deplorably toward each other lately.. in fact there always seems to be arguing when I come to visit.. STOP IT! I am missing my soap operas to make sure I am here in time to read the daily dirt! It is all your fault that the "young and the restless folks" are losing cash by the moment, as their #'s drop and the world tunes into PAW each day right after the price is right...

About that cookie thing though .. can it be so specific as to delete a full tilt cookie for a new full tilt cookie?

I believe the original reasoning was so that if I went to a poker site, read all about full tilt, then the phone rang... and .. or I liked it but I wasn't suuuure but didn't have time to look further into the matter at that present moment ...

So I cook dinner, whatever, talk to my sister on the phone... now what site was that I was looking at again... Oh ya! Full tilt!

So I head straight to fulltilt.com or maybe even fulltiltpoker.com whatever, something of that nature, i download, and man, turns out I was good! Millionaire overnight!

So Full Tilt is being honest here, they didn't bring this lady to their own site, the affiliate nudged her along.. so they leave a cookie on her pc, as a reminder.. she came from thaaat guys site, we owe him a few bucks.

But now if that first guy's site sucked, and was nothing but a collection of banners, or even news (maybe she doesn't much care to sit and read about gambling, what she wants to do is hear the sound of slot machines spinning already, before gramps gets home and wants dinner... again!)

So she leaves that stupid banner farm, and she leaves that stupid news site, and she finds a great article all about progressive slot machines.. dreams really do come true!

She downloads, and all is well in the world, the guy with the banner farm is getting paid nicely, and gramma can now gamble in her robe and curlers without that darned security guard troubling her further.

Everyone else of course got screwed.

So now that I believe I have properly defended my question here, and for argument sake because though I do know full well what a cookie is, I couldn't tell it what to do or not to do...

Is it possible that each of the sites in the lil senerios above could create a cookie? A full tilt cookie that knows to write itself over other full tilt cookies, casino cookies that make sure the last casino site gets credit etc..

I read an analogy posted here recently by someone involving car theft.. let's change that up a bit..

If I walk onto a car lot, and they show me a dirty car, a chrysler 300 actually, (because I REALLY want one of those) filthy windows, flat tires.. just .. no 'curb appeal', dusty interior, in fact, I dress nice, I don't want to sit on those dirty seats! .. I pass.

Down the street, I'm shown another car, identical to the first one.. but this car is nice,, clean, Chrysler 300 .. shiny rims.. sweet soft leather interior... it's used, like the first Chrysler 300, same miles, no smoke, no wear on the break pads or stearing wheel, in all those rudimentary ways they are the same... but this one has that new car smell.. shiny mirrors.. it just has a gleam to it... these folks went to some work presenting me with this new car, can't really tell it was pre-owned.. I buy!!!

Should I go pay that first car lot?

Ah, I understand your logic now. But, let's have a look at two situations here:
Situation 1 - The player wants the incentive and registers:
-visitor goes to pokernews.com, visits fulltilt, gets cookie, visitor leaves
-visitor goes to somepokersite.com
-visitor sees a great deal, and reads on
-visitor listens to advice and clears cookies
-visitor visits fulltilt, gets a new -somepokersite- cookie
-visitor registers at fulltilt and plays
-somepokersite gets paid
-visitor gets the incentive
The visitor who wants the incentive will of course not clear his cookies again, then visit cardplayer, and then register on somepokersite. Agree?

Situation 2 - The player wants the incentive, and doesn't register:
-visitor goes to pokernews.com, visits fulltilt, gets cookie, visitor leaves
-visitor goes to somepokersite.com
-visitor sees a great deal, and reads on
-visitor listens to advice and clears cookies
-visitor visits fulltilt, gets new -somepokersite- cookie, leaves
No matter what happens, the visitor knows about the incentive. Therefore, if he decides he wants to play in the future, he will do so via somepokersite, or via someotherpokersite that offers a better deal (and clear cookies again: we're back at situation 1)

Situation 3 - The player doesn't want the incentive:
-visitor goes to pokernews.com, visits fulltilt, gets cookie, visitor leaves
-visitor goes to somepokersite.com and may visit fulltilt*
-visitor reads, but isn't interested, so he doesn't clear his cookies
-visitor goes to cardplayer.com, visits fulltilt
Now, regardless of what happens at *, we can be sure that pokernews gets paid if he decides to sign up.

This is the way I view things. If anyone still disagrees with the fact that this is completely harmless, then so be it. I don't think I can make this post any clearer.

Clearer? Well, you said you were going to talk about *two* situations, but then listed *three*

The way *you* view things was crystal clear from the beginning.
PPP does not care about how *you* view things, he only wants you to switch to seeing things his way.

PPP wants you to believe that:
  • the first site which noobies visit still deserves credit for the sale and that their efforts contributed in some way to the final sale by another site, and therefore you are a "thief"
  • you are an accomplice to the thousands of scam artists ripping off Poker rooms by signing up duplicate accounts, merely because they had no idea they could clear cookies before they visited your "fraud-mongering" site, and you have now helped educate them
  • telling the scam artists about clearing cookies is going to substantially harm the poker rooms, because they have no other way of knowing if a computer has visited/signed up at their room before (which is simply untrue)
  • the proportion/ratio of players visiting Big Site A and then Small Site B is somehow the same as visiting Small B first and then visiting Big A, which is rubbish. He tried to claim that you could use a 10% figure for purposes of argument, and apply that to both types of sites. That is a total abuse of statistical reasoning. The statistical probability of Big A visit first, and then Small B, is much, much greater than Small B first and then Big A.
  • the fact that you *might* get commissions for players converted on your behalf by a big room somehow makes up for the genuine loss of income you suffer from losing conversions to prior cookies.
He has no interest in legitimately discussing your proposed business model, for the simple reason that it is *not* his business model, and therefore it is - by his definition - inferior, and likely morally corrupt.

He really does not care that if you are going to offer incentives out of your future commissions you *absolutely must get paid the commission* in order to make up for the incentives you offered out of your future commission.

If you promise somebody an incentive, and then it turns out that the commission goes to a prior cookie, then you are *screwed* and will quickly go broke. Not only are you out the CPA fee, but you can end up losing the cost of the incentive.

I think the whole incentive thing is *very* risky unless you have your own Bonus/Referral codes.

And, PPP, is correct that you are probably going to be targeted by scam artists.

PartyforFree - a member of this forum - has experience as an incentive marketer, and maybe you should talk to him - if you have not talked to other incentive marketers already (which you seem to have done, because you appear to have set up deals with them).

You will notice that the biggest incentive marketer of all - Pokersourceonline - only offers Free Money for sites which they have their own referral code for...and fraud is *still* a problem for them. The presence of cookies is irrelevant to the fraud issue for them.

The bottom line is this:

PPP tells you not to worry about clearing cookies, and that it will all balance out equally in the end: your losses will be covered by income that you don't really deserve.

There is no guarantee that you will make up the losses from income *you* do not deserve, and why *should* you have to rely on income you do *not* deserve in the first place???

It is amazing that this self-righteous guy - who considers himself morally superior to all other affiliates - does not see anything morally/ethically wrong with you getting fees for Real Money Players whom you did not "close."

The answer, of course, is that PPP is a huge, successful affiliate, and he knows that he will earn twice or three times as much as you do from the CPAs he snags when you convert for him.

The few, insignificant conversions that *you* are able to "steal" from him via prior cookies really are a tiny drop in the bucket of *his* income, which he can afford to blow off as something that just "evens out in the wash."
In fact, your chances of "stealing" a commission from sites like PokerNews are ZERO, because of all of their proprietary bonus codes and referral codes which will over-ride your cookies. The idea that they are "converting" for you is therefore nonsense.

Jeremy? tell me I am wrong. Tell me that a player with cookies from my site will still be credited to me once he signs up for the special Free Roll deals PokerNews has with all major Rooms.

PPP can afford to be cavalier about the imperfections in the system - because he is making a great deal of money with the way things are right now, thank you very much.

If you convince people to clear cookies, however, he will never make a single dime off of you again....and that brands you a thief in his eyes.

So, you better just shut up, and stop trying to throw a monkey wrench into the system....or else you will be called a liar and a cheater ON NO OTHER GROUNDS THAN ONE SINGLE POST TO THIS FORUM.

That is what is so hilarious about this thread, and this guy.
You are merely trying to get paid for the work you legitimately do in signing somebody up....

and this guy tries to paint you as a thief stealing money out of the mouths of hard-working affiliates....

In reality, the system is set up to benefit the poker rooms and the big affiliates (of course, because they created the system in the first place).

Even though it is clear you deserve credit for the sale, folks like PPP will go through all sorts of logical contortions to make sure they continue to profit at your expense....including smearing your name and reputation.

These are the kinds of people who like to Piss on your leg and then tell you that it is raining.

I think this last post, plus the one from LadyHold'em about the used car deal sums it up pretty much.
Its easy for a big affiliate to take the kind of position that PPP usually takes. He's the one defending PartyPoker on their (late) player fraud iniative (which has cost many affiliate a lot of money) by saying the incentive model we were using (after being encouraged by PartyPoker) was bad business/immoral/illegal, in which he is right only about the first part (the model being bad business long-term). Of course there is a conflict of interests between the big and the small affiliates, and I do not think that trying to get ahead in this business is wrong in itself.
I seriously doubt that there is a single affiliate out there/here who has never, ever used marketing strategies at some point that could be considered dubious or even immoral now. And before I get shouted at for saying that, I'd like to state that I am willing to play by the book (as long as it's not being written by PPP (;-), but at the same time I am willing to do everything to defend my interests.
And thank God in this forum we are not being judged on being right or wrong on the basis of whether we are at the bottom or end of the affiliate food chain, and not on the basis of arguments and points of view.
Jeremy I have read a lot of your posts, but defending PPP because "he's a friend" is probably not the best idea.

LOL! I should read my posts through (I originally intended to write about 2, then decided on 3)

Thanks for supporting my point of view guys!

Now my reply to xpertadvice4u's points about incentivized marketing:
Since I'm a new guy and won't attract many players, it seems like really the only way to go for now is to promote other affiliates (like PSO, PokerSavvy). That business model works out well for me, because:
-My only costs (so far) are $10 for web hosting
-I do not have to pay anyone (less work/responsibility for me, as well as lower risk)
-Players trust my advice more because I am referring them to big, established, reputable sites
-I can offer more deals, including no deposit deals, with no risk to me
-I can offer better deals
Those last two points are what I strive for concerning my content. I want to show people where to find all the best incentivized deals (incl rakeback, etc.). If I only show my own deals, and my deal is not best, then I am lying to visitors (like 99% of affiliates, tbh - who advertise deals as 'the best' when they are clearly not). Except it's not called lying, it's marketing But I still prefer to market the truth

There probably will be players who use my site to find deals, and they may commit some kind of fraud at that point. That can happen regardless of my site being there as 'middle man'. Advising players to clear cookies will not help them with their scam in any way.

I don't think I have stated my point of view on the whole issue in this thread yet. And for all practical purposes I think I made a post a few years ago that defended the principal of the "last person who closed the deal should be getting the credit."

All I stated was that I could assure that another member was not cookie stuffing or doing other blackhat techniques. This allegation was being made and it was false. I would defend any member in this forum that was being accused of something publicly that I knew to be false. I disagree with many people on this forum on issues regarding cookies or incentive marketing. It doesn't mean I still don't respect them or can't be friends with them however.

Cookies have been and will always be one of the hottest topics and most controversial topics throughout the entire affiliate industry. The majority of tracking problems all involve cookies.

I am friends with the CEO of FatWallet.com and even he will agree that cookies are a massive issue even outside of gaming. This thread highlights exactly why. Even affiliates disagree on every aspect that has to do with cookies.

This is such a great topic and the reason why I wanted the discussion to simply get back on track. I didn't want to see it continue down the road it was going with personal attacks, accusations, and childish name calling from all sides.

Fuck, if I wanted this drama I would moderate my Mom's monthly Bunco game with all the 50-60 year old women.

What is did bring up is what constitutes a sale. Jeremy with your sales background maybe you can start another thread on the process

1. Prospecting
2. Initial Contact
3. Sales Presentation
4. Handling Objections
5. Closing the Sale
6. Follow-Up and Service after the Sale

I have a sales background but It was face to face or by phone. Maybe you could expand on this & relate it to poker affiliating where direct contact is generally minimal
