Where do I get legal images from?

there is an unbelievable amount of nonsense on the internet about what is ok to do with other peoples photographs

yes i am in danger of going off on one - why ? because for the last 16yrs I have and am a professional photographer

I am paraphasing here but points mentioned and the facts - and I know that some of the discussion is about pictures YOU own (the copyright) and how you can use them without getting problems from the subject being a celebrity (the comments specifically about this seem to be about right)

but someone mentioned googling images and using them - THIS IS A TOTAL breach of the photographers copyright

infact ANY use of ANY photography that isn't yours (or paid /agreed for use) is a breach of copyright - FACT period full stop no grey areas

I am amazed and dismayed at the use and misunderstanding of use of photographers images without payment on the internet

and the blogger's classic defence of "fair use" is NOT legally remotely well legal - fair use in the legal / copyright acts sense does not mean re-use and republishing (thats what it is) in a blog - and should be paid for or not done

just my 2p worth - but I hate it when nonsense and theft is portrayed as somehow ok because it's easy to do and unfortunately hard for us now near penniless photographers to police and get paid for our work

google images is as far as all of the photographers I have talked one of the most insidious inventions for the
systematic theft of other peoples (ie the author / photographers) images ever invented

far too much to rant about in one post so back to the other half of that bottle of wine - suffice to say - if it's not your picture and you haven't paid or agreed use of said images -

your ARE in breach, you ARE a thief & you ARE robbing someone somewhere of their living

ps. on the issue of using a pic of a celebrity (having paid or agreed use with the photographer / author) then it is correct to say within editorial use then this is allowed - within an endorsement / advertising use you are not

NO you cannot just Google and use them, because YOU did not take the picture and do not have written rights to use that picture. Could you be hunted down...certainly if the person who had the original raw, unedited picture could prove that you were not the originating author.

The same falls true of using trademarked and copyrighted names. I know plenty of website owners that have gotten cease and desist letters just by mentioning certain things on a website WITHOUT permission of the parent company. If they didn't remove the offending material the next step was going to court! Not cool...


Now if you were at some casino and snapped a picture of Johnny Chan you could use it as long as YOU are not profiting from the use of that picture because YOU own the rights to that picture being the "author" of it.
