Thats a lot of tags you have there.

Maybe your audience would appreciate more specific labels.

Hello everyone, and thanks for your suggestions. I am going to try and keep the advertising down after hearing what you folk have to say.

Re: IE6 I can't figure out why it is overlapping. I paid a PAW member to design the code for the K2 style in Wordpress, and they won't get back to me on that for some reason. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I used to have a forum on there but decided it is too hard to try and get a general poker forum going, so I scrapped it and decided to spend more time on the content.

Kaus you don't like the sidebars? I thought they were the best looking part of the site.

Back to the drawing board. Any other feedback?

Pompey you got 48 sign up's from only 800 uniques? The reason I ask is that I had 800 almost 800 uniques.

i dont mind the sidebars I just cant focus on anything. Maybe if it was either cut down to one sidebar. or less ads and such it might be better to focus on what you have to say. Keep trying its hard but it will come

Pomp - your site is too slow, and still looks the same as the rest you've asked comments on

If I wanted I could have 200,000 hits a month. That does not mean I will make even $1.

Traffic has to be targeted if you want to make money. (Example Only) I don't care how great your article about Phil Ivey is if that is the only way people are getting to your site from searching, then you are a broke affiliate with a great Phil Ivey article. You could get 10,000 hits for that all month long and I would be surprised at even one click on a banner and some idiot signing up to a poker room and reallt making a deposit all from a banner on your Phil Ivey article. Yeah Right! That's not happening and no-one is clicking banners so use them sparingly for looks only. Target your keywords and traffic.

Default analyse

hi

I would say among the million other things I've learnt from listening to people here, reading between the lines, taking straight advice etc etc

is to analyse your progress and really get a feel for what is coming to your site and what people do -

as has been said before traffic isnt just traffic - if you get someone landing on your site from search for "xyz site review" then this one search (or 10 or 1000) is worth infinately more than x10 or x100 as much traffic landing from a search for "how to play AA in late position on a tuesday"

at the end of the day if we're honest were all after the same things -

top3 on google for xyz poker and as much "tell me where to put my money now" traffic as possible

thats why so many sites focus on reviews / bonus codes etc because theyre the ones we earn from - all the rest of it is second tier strategy / information / news which whilst it will be read by more people / is more interesting - it doesnt instantly earn money

but a 5 page site that is just bonus codes is

a) unlikely to rank as easily as a good all round site

b) is unlikely to sell the signup offers as it offers little else - authority etc

Use analytics - for traffic and for rank on google and work from there

IMHO I spent alot of time feeling I should do news (knowing I'd never compete with pokernews but thinking its something I should have)

after looking at what people actually clicked when they were offered it I realised that

a) I could never even try to compete with pokernews for general poker news

b) Even if I did get this traffic I wasnt going to be the one able to convert it
(pokernews can and does)

I looked at the clicks through I got from news pieces and realised that visitors landing on my homepage - hadnt got there looking for news

which was personally great that it was already more focussed (ready to signup) but it was a while before I realised the importance of this

I'd rather have a high percentage of 9,000 uniques per month that are either generally or specifically looking to signup somewhere than 20,000 uniques a month trawling for strategy and tips

on the design front - someone else said your shouldnt worry about design (too much) I think this is true too - but the design must be inherently visitor friendly

I like the more white sites now but you could do with maybe either light grey on the side bars to focus them down the middle - or drop one bar and simplify

cheers scrawnybob

Great discussion guys, Losercore and Scrawnybob you have spelled out what (as a newer affiliate) I figured as the "chicken and egg" of this business.

1) Untargetted traffic is about as useful as a chocolate teapot
2) With only a page of bonus codes you are unlikely to rank well for any the targetted traffic you seek...

Personally came to the conclusion that (quality) strategy articles are in many ways a loss-leader... yet these are slowly building the 'authority' of my site (through natural links etc) that is then allowing me to add sections targetting the ' best site' or ' sign-up' visitors that are the really valuable ones.... of 250ish visitors a day maybe 25 are 'targeted' at the moment - in 3 months time I'm looking for a 300/100 ratio, 6 months a 500/300 etc etc

The reason for posting these thoughts - to ask the question whether the experienced folks think this is a viable strategy or the poker affiliate equivalent of banging ones head on a brick wall??

Cheers for the thoughts above guys.

Thanks, Mark
