Default Newb question of the day!

I have a question and no laughing because I am honestly asking.

I have seen many posts about people buying traffic and what not. Is this the same as a paid directory submission or are they literally buying traffic?

If it is actual paid traffic than I have a few questions.

Would this not be false traffic that may or may not have any significant impact on your site or value? What I mean is, this traffic is not coming to your site based on what they "want" am I right?

Would this not be just a short term solution and if so than why bother?

Just a few questions as this part is confusing me and I would like to know a little more about its purpose short and long term.

Thanks

Buying traffic used to be popular back in the late 90's and 2000. It probably still is, but the majority, probably like 95% of it is a scam.

Basically all these companies will promise you 100,000+ unique hits or whatever. Then they set up their automated bot to hit your site from various proxies. So in your stats it will look like traffic, but they are not even real eyeballs.

The only way to buy traffic is through legitimate media buy. For example you pay me for banner space on a poker site or have me include your link in an email to my lists. Buying raw traffic is more than likely complete waste of money.

No argument, but doesn't the traffic statistic make your site look more attractive to people who are considering buying ads on your site?

I bought traffic a few years ago. 10k traffic for $20 - didnt beleive it but thought for the price I had to try. Got the bot sent to my site. No real traffic but I just had to test it out.

As for adding links to other sites, does it not give a temporary boost to your SE rankings outwith the actual clicks you get from the links?

Dont waste your time buying traffic. Build good content, and links to sites that you believe to be a great player resource.
