I have a dual-boot w/Ultimate for testing things & still running XP media center for most things.
The text thing sounds like a keyboard or mouse software glitch?
Fancy keyboards/mice usually have their own software & don't use the OS's settings. I just set my mouse to use the OS instead the other day when it was acting up.
The ctrl+mouse wheel should work, if you have a scroll wheel?
I have a hard time picturing what you're seeing. Did you happen to get a higher screen resolution than you've had with your previous computers/monitors?
