From that news story:

Quote:
The indictment charges Kaplan with failing to pay federal wagering excise taxes on more than $3.3 billion in U.S. wagers.
From the Poker Players Alliance:

Quote:
The United States should follow the lead of the United Kingdom by regulating and taxing online poker, not banning it. An economic analysis just released by our organization shows that U.S. regulation of online poker has the potential to raise more than $3.3 billion in annual revenue for the federal government, in addition to another $1 billion for state coffers. We hope that this analysis will give a fresh perspective for U.S. Senators about the benefits of regulation.
That $3.3 billion number keeps popping up.

It's not that they took it in the USA, its that they used USA "wires" (wire act) to take the bets. Also note that the ownership was of a US Citizen, which makes him subject to US law. Racketeering is a big offense, which is why I stay away from sports betting. Poker and Casinos are much better protected. I've bolded the important parts from this article.

Quote:
In the past decade, federal officials have prosecuted many operators of online sports books with U.S. ownership or operations because federal law prohibits using phone wires to place those bets, said Anthony N. Cabot, a Las Vegas lawyer who has represented traditional and online casinos.

In a celebrated case from 2000, prosecutors won a conviction against Jay Cohen, a U.S. citizen who ran an operation in Antigua that took sports bets from Americans over the Internet. He was sentenced to 21 months in prison.
In North America, for example, sports gambling is generally forbidden, while in many European nations, bookmaking (the profession of accepting sports wagers) is regarded as an honorable occupation and is not criminalized.

I have wagered before with BetOnSports through a Pay Pal account and a Neteller account what is the difference between that and a poker room?
I understand the guy is a U.S. Citizen, but it just does not make any sense to me, especially the timing after that bill was passed last week.
