$1,000 Advertising Budget
If you had $1k to launch an ad campaign on a promotion you were running for one single poker room, how would you use it?

Do a co-registration campaign for optin poker players and run a newsletter on them with your affiliate code - 3-4 times in a month - then sell the database to another affiliate

Maybe I misunderstood your post..but running a campaign and emailing 3-4 times a month I would consider it spam from anyone....second selling off the database of opt in users is illegal. Yes they did the opt in for you...but not for the buyer.
If I am wrong sorry just taking from what you posted.

To be honest I am not sure if I would spend 1K on advertising alone. It could prove to be pointless with little return over the long haul unless you have an idea that would work, but strictly promoting one room may not. Just my opinon .
Here is what I would do if I was going to put money into my site....content
I would hire someone to help in writing the content for my site, two people whipping out pages or even three...make the changes necessary on page. I would probably spend some on good directories for inclusion for the main keywords I am going after. I think this is a better deal in some cases because you have a year paid for a fraction of what some of the bigger sites charge for a link, and if you can get in the root or top level of the niche even better IMO not to mention the ability to submit internal pages
I would pay for a few links from some bigger sites but not alot, and exchange some.
I would do what I can to benefit myself in the long run by ranking for those terms so in 6 mths I am still there while that money has already been long gone.

Something else to consider will you have enough to sustain your costs for a campaign once your terms are up with everyone else...meaning if you dont make what you want right off the bat will you be able to upkeep?

I wouldn't advertise either...I would get a link or two from an authority site and just use the rest to get help writing content. Every page of content you add to your site is like adding backlinks as well. Quoting directly from Randy's site...
"The best way to develop links to your site is to create content. Google doesn't distinguish much between links from other sites and links from your own site. So every time you write a new page that links back to other pages on your site, you've built a bunch of links. Neat huh?"
Content is a win-win situation. Buying an ad is so iffy, I would prefer to spend money on something that has a lasting value.

I would look for one that is updated frequently, has alot of unique content. Things I am looking at now include, how many outgoing links they have on that page, and if that page is related to my page. I am not going to say who I would prefer to buy links from but those are a couple of things I look for...whether it's right or not I dont know..just my own personal preference.
Asger - your link is not live, you need to use [ not < for your link. Go to you CP delete that one than add only teh words, highlight the ones that you want for anchor and use the insert link button to do it.....just a heads up...do you know how long it took me to figure out there was a button for that stuff lol
