To answer initial question...

1) $300 on links (long term on newer sites with potential). Unfortunately only $1000 won't get you too many high quality links.

2) $50 on directory submissions

3) $400 on articles

4) Remaining $250~ on some smaller sites that I could use to promote the main site.

Classic. This is some true black hat seo spirit that has made many an affiliate a buck or two.

Thanks to those who answered the actual question, especially Graham, who broke it down so specifically. This is really what I was looking for

I'd love to hear some more opinions from others as well

What would you do to get the most good traffic in the shortest amount of time if you had the $1k?

I realize it is tough, and not very cut and dry, but I am just looking for some ideas

1. Write or Get 10-20 QUALITY articles written. ($200-400)

2. Get these socially bookmarked. ( $10 each)

3. Set up a newsletter, add this in a position on the page that is really eye catching, bright colours etc. ($100 for 12 months or so)

4. Set up an auto-responder, choose 2-4 rooms with good bonuses, add your links. (FREE + Easy to do)

Social bookmarking can bring 1000's of visitors a month, i have literally been flooded with traffic from social bookmarking sites, although most of it isn't targeted some of it is and these visitors will easily pay for the money spent on this process.

Hope thats helps a bit.

Curious what you mean about this. Does this mean you get someone with a good rep to submit to digg/delicious/etc? If so, who provides this service?

No prob.... to get the most good traffic in a short time is a little more difficult. Your best bet to get fast and quality traffic without spending a lot would be to use things like myspace or facebook. Quickly build up a list of friends and constantly market to them, and try and get them to do some of your marketing for you. Other than that, that is a little more difficult to do IMO. Really the only way is just trying to pump out a lot of content as fast as you can, utilizing proper SEO techniques, and trying to get as many incoming links as possible.

Jcap - Here is a link to another one of Randy's articles ( seems like his articles are coming up quite a bit lately)

I think it is relevant to what you are trying to do and actually eases up onthe "how do I get there?" mentality.
