I am thinking about putting some ads in the newspapers of major universities and colleges. I am not sure if they will let me put poker ads in the papers. Has anyone attempted this?

I plan on making one of my old colleges my first point of attack but don't like the idea of posting in the paper. Considering myself the typical college poker player I don't think I've even touched the school newspaper in two years. I was going to contact the student housing and see if I can just post fliers on everyones door. I noticed by the mailboxes today that there is a bulletin board and none of them appeared to have any University stamp thing that most college boards require so I'll probably hit those. If I call the housing people and they say it's okay to just go around and put the fliers on everyones door I'll go for that. It'll be a fun day of walking but I'm hoping it'll pay off when I see my first sign-ups.

I've advertised in multiple college newspapers before (SDSU/UCSD/USC) for about a 6week period. Extremely minimal returns on the investment. Would not recommend this as good advertising.

The dorm flyering is probably your best bet.

Egthareal,

Thanks for the info. I was actually going to try running a few ads in the UCSD Guardian, my former school. I guess I will scratch that idea.

I tried to do some advertising in a college paper and we were three days away from the presses running when they put a kabosh on the ad because it was gambling related. I suppose it depends on the university.

I think one of the most powerful things you can do on a college campus is too develop a message board where people can discuss home games and you can begin to develop a list of poker players. Once you get enough members you can then host an online tourney "just for these players" at a site that allows this. UB is good for doing this.

Party Poker will allow you to set up private cash games which is also a great idea as well. I have gained many loyal RMP's by hosting private 2-4 games.

I wish I could go back to college start doing this stuff as a freshman. Man the possibilities are endless in college towns. Instead I was busy chasing tail and trying to be an Ebay guru. (One of the two didn't work out)

Pretty sure advertising in the USA is actually illegal.. i.e. targeting groups of people

ACtually I know it is.. Most states won't let you do it, just an FYI

Ask Party or Empire.. They stay right away from colleges..

The newpaper is an interesting idea. I too haven't look at the paper in... actually never.

Funny Jeremy brought up idea of hosting tournaments for a specific college. I have had that very thing in the makings for the last few days. I have spoken with another affiliate that I ran into on my campus. I saw him handing out fliers and he was nice enough to let me pick his brain. He says he has moved to CPA for college students. Most of them make the minimum deposit and go for the sites with the biggest bonus for that minimum deposit. He has over 100 real players on party poker with shared earnings and he's making very little money. After speaking with him and brainstorming for the last few days I came up with what I think is a solid plan.

Here is my next advertising venture:

I have purchased the domain that is targeted for my campus. www.XXXpoker.com (XXX=initials of the college you're gunning for). The site I am developing for this site is based around a poker league. Here is why I think it will do so well at colleges. ITS FREE! I found that NoblePoker.com offers a 65 dollar progressive CPA plan and all your users have to do is sign up and make a minimum deposit of 20 dollars. They dont have any requirements to fulfill. They can sign up and then withdraw the funds later. I am offering weekly freerolls with cash prizes. The league will also have a leader board with a points plan similar to pokerstars tournament leader board. The leagues points leaders will also be awared prizes after the 11 week season. I felt 11 weeks was enough time to make money and get word of mouth, yet not lose money on the freerolls. I have let the players know that the site is free, but is indirectly funded by them, for them. I made it very clear that the more players they get in the league the larger the free rolls become. That itself will be good for some word of mouth. Of course the site will be full of the rest of my affiliate links and it should be good for a few a mointh.

I forgot to add that I made some business cards with the details. I already found some freshmen that will pass them out in their dorms for 30 bucks. Considering that Noble poker is new, and unheard of I shouldnt have a problem with people already have accounts, and I would imagine 150 students would be easy to come by with a campus of 15000 students total.

Being that its a local niche the members should get more involved. I created a forum and will fill it with local topics. Getting groups of friends will be the key. It will be better for competition and word of mouth.

I have a feeling it will do well and cant wait to start on a new college next month.

New here so I've been reading all the first posts...

Just a note about colleges/universities/any "group-housing" areas. If they're all on the same Intranet (most college/university students receive an internet connection free from the school) - you may not be able to receive more than 1 "new" signup per college/university with all poker affiliate programs?

Any proof on this?

Has anyone ever tried putting an ad in your LOCAL newspaper?
Were your results good?
