Default content question

If you find something on someone elses site that you think would work well on your website, I realize just copying it and putting it up would be plagerism, but if you put it up and link back to them on that page informing people where the content came from, is that okay? Or should you still get permission from them even if you are going to link back?

It's still theft, even with the link, there is a law that makes it tolerable, or harder to call theft, that says if you post it for the purpose of discussion, then it's legal.. Don't quote me there, because I don't remember where to find the law, but that's still sticky.

You can rewrite it, into your own words, when I do this, I usually try to find 2-3 articles, read them all, and then kind of write my own take on the bulk of the three of them, so that I know I don't inadvertently copy anyone else's words. I did hear a name for that approach recently, something like cop n chop.. so still not the most popular method in the world as far as opinions can go.

On another note entirely, if you're using stuff as is, assuming it's text, you're not likely getting the credit or traffic you could be getting from Google, or other search engines, as they realize it's duplicate..

The legal theory LadyHoldem is talking about is called "fair use", and it's a provision of copyright law. You are not allowed to repost an entire work, but only a portion of it, and for it to be considered "fair use", you also have to be using the copyrighted material in a not for profit manner.

Rewriting stuff in your own words is tricky too, because you can still be plagiarizing even if you rewrite something into your own words. For example, if I copied an entire article from your site, pasted it onto my page, then changed the order of the words in most of the sentences, then I probably haven't done enough original work for it to *not* be plagiarism. (If rewrote every sentence that was in active voice in passive voice, all the sentences would be different, but I'd still be plagiarizing.)

If I reworded the entire book The Theory of Poker, but kept the same topics, and turned it into a 200 page website, I've violated Sklansky's copyright. I have to provide something new, different and unique for it to *not* be plagiarism. On the other hand, I could take each of the topics that Sklansky addresses in The Theory of Poker and provide commentary, examples from my own play, and disagreements I might have with his ideas, and produce an original work.

Summarizing multiple sources and providing your opinion on those multiple sources creates something new and unique, so that's a real approach. I don't think LadyHoldem meant that she's plagiarizing stuff, but it should be clear to people that *just* rewriting something into your own words is still copying.

All that being said, take anything I tell you about this with a grain of salt, because I'm no attorney, and most of what I post here is strictly for entertainment purposes.

Linking back does nothing. You can't use the the material of others without permission, except via fair use.

Put another way, if somebody stole John's car, it wouldn't make it okay for the thief to write "this is John's car" on it.

I would always ask for permission first, I would be v annoyed if someone copied something of mine without contacting me first.

But if they asked permission and gave a backlink or whatever there's no problem.

Brilliant analogy.

Hilarious... LOL

Writing your own, unique content has so many benefits for you..... there really is no reason to waste your time looking for anything else.

Buckle down and write from the heart.....SEO it.

Post on your site and reap the benefits.

Simple.

Try what I have been doing lately.

Pick up a poker book.

Read a page or 2.

Copy the title.

Ramble on vaguely about the subject.

SEO & reshape it a little & change the title to match.

Now you have an article that looks nothing like the book.

Has a totally different approach.

Full benefit of SE content.

Totally unique article.

Takes an hour or 2 max for the lot.

Page 11 & 12 from Poker for Dummies, lol

Oh I hear ya...Its just that I am re-doing my site right now and we were just in need of some really stock stuff like "responsible gambling" and a few others. I have never approached someone about using their stuff because I usually do write my own, so I just curious on what the best approach was.

Thanks for all the replys

Always ask for permission, most of the time if you are linking to them to they will be happy for the link. Plus if they dont like it and you just copy it you will save your self from being scolded in the forums this can be bad!!!!!!!!
