Default Prediction

I thought it would take a little longer before we saw my prediction coming true but there it is. The Poker War between PartyGaming and the like and the Rogue Poker Rooms begins. It is going to get nasty I think. My advice keep your heads down and pick the pockets of the dead and dying (just a metaphor). Remember the nail that stands up gets hammered down.

Anyone else agree with this: (partygaming CEO)

"Some people think players will just run to the other side (private companies) -- (but) they won't," Garber said. "Payments will be difficult. For a few weeks it may seem like Christmas, but I think Christmas will end fairly quickly."

I would say Mr Garber is out of touch with reality and should look for another industry, cause he doesn't seem to be in touch with the poker industry and how poker players think (IMO).

The players will most certainly continue to play, and I really don't think most players will have any major issues with getting money into/out of any of the major poker rooms that are left when the dust settles.

au contraire...
If and WHEN the U.S regulates online gaming who do you think is going to be there first with their hand in the air hollering...
"We enforced your ban, we enforced your ban...let us in !"
(of course they will have to compete with Harrahs, but...)
The regulators will look upon them as compliant and consider that, and the public wont care or remember for long who was helping enforce the ban, they will flock to the now legal site(s).
At least thats what Party Hopes...

I think Mitch Garber is right and that funding will be the big problem. He is also completely correct that there is no legal integration. Either you are compliant or not. All of the mental gymnastics being performed to justify actions is just a waste of time. (Stop drinking the Koolaid Cardplayer.com)

Many people have suggested that NETeller is beyond the reach of the law and nothing could be further from the truth. They undoubtedly are now one of the prime targets and I think what will happen is that the banks will simply blacklist NETeller (ie. RBS and Barclays banning gaming companies)as being basically a gaming funding company. US banks are not going to risk problems with regulators or law enforcement so they can process checks for NETeller. Especially since the banks are making very little on these transactions with NETeller. NETeller is basically a net drain on bank deposits and now there is a real legal issue.

However, gamblers are resourceful and they will find ways (I blogged about this at www.blog.jacksnqueens.com sort of my ode to the gambler). The future funding is simply smaller similar companies that will change more often as the large firms can be too easily targeted.

One last thing to consider about the future of legalized gaming in the US. Someone mentioned that Party would have an advantage for being compliant which I think is true and the reverse is true which means that all of the non-compliant will be at a distinct disadvantage for entering a future legal U.S. market.

Party is so funny, they actually said something like that in Amsterdam. Something about "they bring in all of the NEW business in the industry". I for one would like to say "thank you" for that. Though I don't completely get the part where I should name my first born Starluck.

I was talking to a friend and suggested three things that I thought would happen. He said, "why do you think this?", to which I responded "because if those three things happen that is my best case scenario". It seems like Party actually made plans based on their best case scenario.

Party would not be the only legal site just because they helped enforce the ban. As a player, I for one would remember who helped the U.S govern my freedom, as a lot of others would. Poker Players are a rare breed...don't ever try to roll em...

Party and any other room that pulled out of the market now are officially off my radar for future play in a legal US market.

To pull out now probably set things back further then they already were in regards to getting gambling, especially online gambling, legalized in the US.

If the big boys stuck around and put up a fight, I think the regulations and legalizations would have come much quicker. They could have made a very big step right now especially with elections coming up. All their marketing power could have made it well known the amount of money the US government is pushing away by not regulating the industry and letting in our boarders.

For this, the tent folders are off my computer forever.

So you want to punish those that follow the law and reward those that don't? Everyone thinks that PokerStar and FTP are saviors and are making a stand for Americans. They don't care about you, they care about your money. And they are willing to get it by any means necessary, including breaking the law.

There is no law being broken here.

Full Tilt and others are not breaking any laws. They own a lemonade stand that exists on foreign soil. If Americans come to them to play, that is THEIR choice.

I guess if I am an American and I go to Amsterdam and visit a LEGAL brothel or smoke dope I am breaking the law too?

Not only that, but the internet is a VIRTUAL place...it only exists in theory and anyone who uses it is using a fantasy world that doesn't really have a home.

The USA needs to learn that they don't govern the WORLD...they govern what happens on the public sidewalks and on roads within the United States borders. They should not control what we do in our homes in private and should not control what we do on our computers.

Poker Stars and the other companies are not breaking laws, because the USA can't tell them what they can and can't do. The only people who would be breaking the law are US banks if they SEND money to the company. They are the ones who should be prosecuted if this is in fact a law anyone wants to follow and believe in.

I am sick of the US government thinking they control the WORLD. They want to be BIG BROTHER and we better not let them anymore.

It was a real eye-opener when I went to Amsterdam and Europe and saw how much more freedom takes place over there. And EVERYONE was having a good time. It is no wonder everyone here is STRESSED and unhappy with their lives.

Sorry...for rambling and ranting.
