Default Laptop keeps shutting down......

Couldn't really decide what forum to put this in.....Anyhow, my laptop keeps shutting down when I open up multiple labor intensive programs such as photoshop and large .pdf's.

Prior to shutting off however, the fan gets real loud and then poof it's off. It always starts back up.

It's a HP Pavillion zv6000. Anyone ever had a similar issue? I am thinking of taking it to the boys in the Geek Squad and paying a few hundred to have a high school kid tell me I need a new fan. Could be more complex I suppose though.

Calling all techies! any thoughts?

It definitely sounds like it needs a new fan and is shutting off because its over heating. Pretty hard to know whats up without looking at it though.

i had the same problem and they took it in and did a virus scan and found nothing they siad i needed a new hard drive.. witch is worth half of what i pad for the laptop, i said i would think about it and slowly the problem went away.

My laptop wouls shutdown to a blue plage then start back up.

If thats your problem DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON VIRUS SCAN!!

Default had similar problems with HPs

but not laptop.

Sounds like you are saying the laptop actually *shuts down* and then restarts? of just freezes up?

My fan would make loud whirring noises...but they seemed to come at times of intensive use of CPU resources....special problems when using PDF files.

My problem seemed to go away when I did a system restore back to a date when everything seemed to be working fine.

Fan motor still whirs at times, but no more screen freezing.

Yea it doesn't freeze or "shut down", it actually just turns off. Luckily I use my desktop during the day so I have a backup computer.

A system restore sounds like a pain in the ass.....but might not be a bad idea considering how much crap gets downloaded and installed on this machine every 6 months. I hope my techie made an image of this back when it was new.

Adobe products are notorious for overheating laptops. It used to happen to me all the time, sudden shutdown when I had dreamweaver, photoshop and imageready open at the same time.

Have you got a decent laptop riser / cooler with integral fans? I've had one about 6 months and haven't overheated once since I got it - only about $40, great investment.

100% overheating - they get SUPER dusty inside and often this alone can cause them to run WELL over temperatures.

Hell, my desktop was running ~35 degree (C) higher than normal, graphics card was running ~20(C) higher than normal. 1/2 inch of dust on the CPU heatsink was causing it to overheat and freeze or reboot. 1 hour of cleaning later, temperatures are down a TON. Same exact thing happen to my laptop (17" desktop replacement variety laptop), although that took more like 6 hours to disssect and clean. =(
