Default How many pages...

How many pages do your sites have? To those of you that have gone from just a few pages to a few hundred, what can you say about traffic and search engine prescence? How can you keep your pages from disappearing into the supplemental index? Does placing a few links on each page to the new pages help?

My biggest site is getting close to 400 pages. The more pages you have, the more keyword phrases you can target, which brings more traffic to your site. To keep your pages from going supplemental, you need to make sure they have a significant amount of PageRank and links flowing to each page.

If you're a search engine, and you have a supplemental index for unimportant pages, would you put the page that has links from 300 other pages on your site in supplemental, or would you put the page that has links from 3 other pages on your site in supplemental?

Good point, so when you have a ton of pages, you need to have a linking structure that is more than just links in your footer and side nav?

From my understanding you should be inter linking all your pages that are relevant. example if I am correct say you have a bankroll article you would want to give a link from another article that uses that phrase and so on throughout the site

Yeah, more or less. A lot of people organize this by theme and section.

Like say you've got a movie website. You might have 10 sections:

1- Classic Movies
2- Science Fiction Movies
3- Westerns

etc...

Then you might have 50 pages in each section, each page devoted to a specific movie. If you have 10 sections, then you have 510 pages. (50 movies pages and a hub page for each of those movies.)

A common linking structure would be to have all of the individual classic movie pages link to all of the other classic movie pages, and so on.

In other words, you can and should think about having separate text link menus for different sections of your site.

That's just one way of doing it, by the way. There are plenty of other ways to do it. Blogs, for example, organize all of their "section" categories by month and sometimes by subject too.

i'm not trying to come off condescending on this one, but when the obviousness of this hit me i thought i was a complete moron to have missed such a basic connection....

what i'm getting at is that you're on the world wide web - keyword "web" so, think of a web and get your pages linking to eachother as much as possible (and yes, keep the relevancy intact)

sad thing is i don't necessarily follow this advice - as in ever really BUT it's something that should be done imo

I've always tried to have relevant text links within the content of my pages (pointing to other relevant pages on my site). I think the word "hub" helped me realize the big picture. You need to have numerous(depending on size of your site) "hub" pages that have good incoming links and PR, and use the relevant hub page to drive the sub-pages of that "hub" in the search engines.

Correct me if I'm wrong please

I think that's a pretty good way of looking at it, JohnH, absolutely.
