Default Discussion to ban Online Gambling/Advertising in Ontario Canada

This is the debate/discussion in Ontario legislature regarding the possibility of Ontario Canada banning online gambling advertising and play.

This is a hillarious and excellent read! A must read for all of us here at PAW.

Jeremy, you will really enjoy this!! And PPP I would love to hear your feedback.

"The growth of illegal Internet gaming sites, onshore and offshore, is a real and serious threat to the future viability and integrity of both the horse racing industry and government-operated gaming."

Hilarious....

Haha..this is too much. We have been reading this on MSN for the last while. One of my favorites is this:

"I also want to welcome Jane Holmes from the Woodbine Group. As the member said, it's wonderful to see you here today. I know the member from Etobicoke North is so proud of your announcement of a $1-billion investment in our province from Woodbine. We think that's wonderful, and we wish you well on that and the contribution you're making."

Hmm.... I wonder who is pushing for this bill.... lol

Thanks for posting this. I am rather pissed that this has entered our parliament.

Time to do some work on it. My member of parliament and every other across the country is going to hear from me....

...frickin politicians...

It is absolutely amazing how much bullshit is thrown into the mix with regard to this bill. While it is obviously amusing to most of us here, it is not amusing to these people in power and the ones making decisions on our laws. I think the reason for that is because most of us here realize that most of the arguments in favour of this bill are either lies, half-truths, don't target the real problems, have ulterior motives (keeping the gaming industry a governemnt monopoly), or just plain bullshit. The problem is that all the other members who will be voting on this issue who don't really know any better than what they are hearing, might end up just going with the flow and agreeing to the passing of this bill because it 'sounds good'. I live in Ontario and am planning on contacting my member of parliment to here what he has to say on this matter.

"These websites are businesses that operate outside Canadian law. They are competing directly with legal businesses in Ontario, businesses that create jobs in communities across the province and businesses that must operate in a socially responsible manner. It's not a level playing field, and it does threaten to take away local jobs."

So what? Since when can international businesses not compete with Ontario businesses. Can we not bid on ebay and buy a television over the internet? Does that not also interfere with the walmarts and Best Buys of Ontario? When I buy anything online instead of in a store in Ontario, how is that any different than gambling on a site that Ontario doesn't get a cut from? The difference is the tax. Just tax the internet gaming companies already and take your bloody precious taxes and let Canada remain somewhat a free country.

Well Kyle, according to the person proposing this bill, "Gambling sites are open for business 24 hours a day, attracting consumers with flashy websites. People are often lured to illegal sites by bait-and-switch tactics, and thus make purchases they hadn't originally intended." There is no way that anyone would try to do this kind of thing with a place like ebay.. Maybe we should just make everything illegal on the internet. Then again, maybe politicians should stop being funded by large companies that are currently offshoring a large percentage of their current workforce... Wait, that would be too easy.

The date of this discussion is march. They also mention...

The Deputy Speaker: Mr. Leal has asked that the bill be referred to the standing committee on justice policy. Agreed? Agreed.

...is this a done deal? Anyone know?
