If the bill passes the house (which it only needs a 1-vote majority to do so), it then goes to the Senate for a debate/vote. In the Senate, a 2/3 majority is required for the bill to pass.

I think we might be screwed...over 75% voted yes.
Maybe the senate will gun it down but the overwhelming support doesn't look good.
In the event it does pass I can really see some serious public outcry over this. Congress really is out of touch with what is really going on out there. Hopefully a groundswell of opposition could rise from the guy who wants to play a $5 sit and go but may face 5 years in the slammer if he does so...wishful thinking.
Who knows?

Good call MrMcgee, this is why all the online gambling bills have hit so much opposition in the last 6 years. Getting a majority in the house is a hell of a lot easier than getting a 2/3 vote in the senate.

I just hope the lobbyists have been focusing on the senate more then the House due to the 2/3's vote requirement.
When would the Senate vote on this?
Might be time to try out 10/20 nl maybe now or never

Hmmm.... now what? Is anything going to change? Should I move my site to a host in another country?

AFAIKIF IF the senate manages to keep from voting on this and the session ends (september), then the whole process must start again..the bill must be reintroduced at the house level and passed again.

Ok, I was wrong. To pass the senate, a 2/3 majority is not required. I looked this up just to be sure I hadn't missed something in American Gov't class back in high school. Seems I did. A 2/3 majority in the Senate is only needed when overriding a Presidential Veto - and I think we all know how likely that scenario coming about is...
That being said, check out the latest article on CNN on this topic:
http://www.cnn.com/2006/POLITICS/07/....ap/index.html
I'll just paste the first part of this article, as much of it is just rehash of the old article...
-------------------------------------------------------
WASHINGTON (AP) -- The House passed legislation Tuesday that would prevent gamblers from using credit cards to bet online and could block access to gambling Web sites.
The legislation would clarify and update current law to spell out that most gambling is illegal online. But there would be exceptions -- for state-run lotteries and horse racing -- and passage isn't a safe bet in the Senate, where Republican leaders have not considered the measure a high priority.
The House voted 317-93 for the bill, which would allow authorities to work with Internet providers to block access to gambling Web sites.

Does that answer your question dbrider? Things would definitely change.

In the coming weeks the senate recesses to campaign for reelection, then after the election comes back for a few weeks. They can pass it either time. if they don't pass it before the end of the year, they have to start over.
Like in the past, Jon Kyl will likely try to tack the bill onto something else unrelated.
