For anyone looking for a long term cash flow from a college campus read on. Those of you looking for a quick mid year bonus, it probably wont be as usefull.
As someone that has stuck to mostly offline advertising at local colleges here are my money makers:
**Disclaimer** I can barely see straight - tomorrows headache will take a toll on me. My statements are factual, but excuse the lack of fluidity in my post along with the many many typing errors which I'm sure will follow
- NICHE SITE!!!!!! Unless you can get CDs with your embedded affiliate code, stay away from bonus codes. They don't understand the affiliate codes, but they know they can use their knowledge of the internet to find the code later on and the fliers become un important other then advertisement for party. Point them to a niche url instead. It'll be easier for them to remember and you'll have them emotionally attached since they can relate.
- Make sure the site is professional, but not a giant sales pitch. College students are very internet savy. They don't want to view a basic text html page, nor do they want to see a banner farm.
- HIDE ALL AFFILIATE URLS - out of all internet users, college students can smell affiliate links from a mile away. Don't give them any reason not to click your link.
- Create a forum/community within the niche site.
- offer free rolls on a regular basis, even if the added money is only 20-40 dollars. College players are broke and will spend and hour trying to win $1.30
- sign up bonuses with gifts relating to college/pro sports and dating. I have found tickets to our local NBA games to be very sought after along with a combo gift certificate that Red Robin offers for a dinner and a movie.
- The students are always looking for live games, give them a way to talk about them, set them up, etc. They'll notify their friends, and word of mouth is your strongest advertisement on campus.
- Use the local food hang outs to your advantage. Set up a relationship with the owners early in your career. Support their business with larger logo or advertisement on some fliers in exchange for a flier at their cash register or in their bathrooms. Set up drawings to be held at their stores but you offer the prizes - Free 50-100 dollars at party poker is always a good prize because you'll receive the kick backs. Most places love to see their logos on tshirts, especially when it doesnt cost them anything. Makes some shirts that have your url, and their logo, then pass them out at the college sports events. Make the logo bigger then your URL as you'll find the students to be more prone to wear it.
- Last but not least, try to not step on any toes. Colleges will be quick to take action if your fliers and advertising gets out of hand. Don't get greedy, and take a hint if you have 100 fliers removed over night. Find new a creative ways for the students to do the advertising for you. Word of mouth is your best friend.
Hope this is some what usefull. I'm sure I'll read it tomorrow and add some more stuff.
