Fatty,

Any online brokerage will have different savings plans available. It really just matters as to what level of risk vs return you are up for. If no risk, then the most you will probably get these days is 2-3.5 % .

IGM yields about 2.65% I believe. This would be a wise first choice for your beginner investman plan.

Dont invest in that garbage. With inflation near 2% yearly you are only standing still with your money. You want at least 12-13% back on your money.

TRowe price has a really good capital appreciation fund that has consistently earned 12-15% yearly. The beta "risk" is pretty much as low as you can get.

Look at the stats. Here is the link. Its extrememly low risk for a market retun of about 13%.

Personally here's what I would do.

Before investing:
Pay off all debt except mortgage
Have 3-6 months expenses in a savings/money market account for emergencies ONLY!

Then as hoursurf said you need to invest enough to beat inflation, which has actually averaged about 4% annually here in the U.S. .

You're investing long term (5 years or more) so go with mutual funds that have averaged over 12% over at least a 10 year period.

Buy funds from four areas evenly.
25% Growth
25% Growth & Income
25% Aggressive Growth
25% International

This means your money will be pretty diversified, which lowers risk. Using this method if you invested just $100 per month over 40 years you would be a millionaire. Imagine doing $500 - $1000 per month! Stay away from single stocks unless you just want to gamble (use your poker bankroll for that). Cd's and bonds really don't have enough return to bother with. Also, stay away from any product you don't understand. Don't take anyones 'opinion' , do your own research and decide for yourself. We all want to help any way we can.

PM me if you need any further explanation. I teach a class called Financial Peace, so I really get into this stuff!

Good Luck

Load up on Party Poker and Empire Online stock. Also, get in on the PokerStars and Pacific Poker IPO's coming soon. Anybody see that baidu.com (Nasdaq:BIDU) IPO today?

A couple of things:

First http://home.ingdirect.com/ orange savings accounts are 1 of the best. I think first bank or internet bank gives a slightly higher yearly average on their money market accounts. I have an ING account that I opened recently. I like it. Its just an account that earns me more than my regular bank. ING 3.15% My bank 2.something

If you want to outpace inflation you are going to have to beat it. That will require likely mutual funds or other investments that can earn more than the 3%.

I can highly recommend Vanguard funds as having nearly the lowest possible fees and nearly all are no load funds.

Its quite easy to setup a 25% each portfolio there too. I do not own any Vanguard funds or have an account with them///yet. I do plan on opening an account there in the future though.

If you the UK offers something along the lines of a ROTH IRA. Start one up now. All gains are tax free as long as you don't pull them out early. Well some gains can be pulled out early tax free like for school, but otherwise you have to wait till you are in your 50s I think. Then make max contribution every year (if you can afford too and you need to make a certain amount per yr).

God no.

Party Poker stock is overhyped and overpriced.

I'm saying that with my investor hat on. Not my "bitter party sucks but we have to work with them" hat that I often wear.

I'm an investment consultant for a $50Million fund (the marketocracy m100) and my picks have returned over 100% over the last three years. Steer clear unless you're risk tolerant enough to make a short side play (buying put options, esp with longer expiry dates, has a lot of potential IMO with less risk than going short).
