Owning Directories
Wanting to find out from any of the members here if any own directories.
If so how difficult would you say it is to run?
Can they be banned as quick as people throw them up?
I am considering a couple of options and slightly hesitant how Google sees these directories...more so the new ones.
Thanks for you opinions

General web directories are a waste of time unless you can afford to hire real editors who can discern between nonsense sites and quality. You also have to be willing to reject sites, and require that your editors reject sites.
Niche directories can be extremely valuable. I like to build them by hand though. No directory scripts for me, thanks. (I know I'm hopelessly old-fashioned.)
Michael Martinez wrote a neat blog post at SEOmoz about "elite directories" one time. I really like that concept a lot. Seems a lot more manageable to me, and more fun too.

Thanks Randy for comment and article. A directory actually based on readers rather than google....

Well, yeah...all your websites should be for readers and not for Google.

You are, like you said, hopelessly old-fashioned Randy. lol
Check out Randy's site at:
http://www.poker-tomorrow.com/poker/seo/
It's a perfect example of a clean, informative, optimized site that talks to you like a real person not just some potential customer.
A good lesson for all of us..... you can catch more flies with honey than you can with vinegar.
His article on split testing is a must read for beginners and a good reminder for the more experienced:

Great site Randy.

His articles written for the affiliate aspect are great and actually make sense. They are humorous and right to the point. Many of the ones you find regarding SEO and how to build sites go into a lot of detail that much of it still left me just as confused about the subject before I began reading them...where as Randy has a way of explaining it thats logical.....a very good read!
