With all the quasi illegal ideas floating around here I want to throw out a suggestion that has worked for me in the past and shouldn't get you into any legal issues. Personally I would be extremely uncomfortable with some of the previous ideas discussed in this thread.
Instead of being secretive and sneaking around, go to the most popular sports bar in your area and meet the owner. Kiss his ass a litlle bit and tell what a great club he has and how you really want to work with him on something that you think could be a win/win for both of you.
Explain how popular poker has become and how it is such a huge craze right now. Then tell him about your website and that you are looking to partner with either his club or (his competition) who is really excited about the idea. Basically tell him what you are looking for is to give him a big write up on the homepage of your website as being the preffered sports bar in town as well as the choice of local poker players. Also explain to him how much local traffic comes to your site as well as any other advertising inniatives you may have.
In return for this all you ask is that the owner allows you to stop in every Friday and hang a few fliers around the club. It's a win for him because every time someone goes to visit your site, they will be greeted by a promo ad for his club with a coupon for a free drink or $1 off any drink to attempt to get them back in the door to that club (See Below). Of course the owner would want to get repeat business right? Furthermore it is just one more time the web visitor will have the clubs name in front of them.
Then if you have a marketing budget, you make coupons for $1 off any drink at XYZ Sports Pub that can be printed from your site. Let's say 200 get printed off and used........you will need to pay the owner $200 or work out some sort of deal.
I could expand on this entire thing quite a bit, but were all marketers here and I assume you probably get the idea. Imagine the milage you could get out of this if the largest sports bar in town lets you hang fliers every weekend. Certainly you may get turned down a few times, but who cares. Rejection is part of sales and you simply forget about them and move onto the next prospect.
If you don't like approaching people then put together a professional letter and send it out to all the club owners in your area.
People always ask me how I have been successful with offline marketing and it is because I actually go out and do it. Most people read stuff like this and think it is a great idea but 99% of the time don't do anything with it.
