How important is a good logo?

[Kestrel]

I am considering spending a bit of money on my site and wondered if getting a professional designer to create a logo is a good investment.

Here's the logo I created myself...

It's not much more than a downloaded font, and a bit of editing on Fireworks.

How does this look to you guys?
I believe the design of my site is pretty good, but that this logo let's it down a little.
For me personally it's too big, and the name of my site is too long.

Does anyone know of any good agencies that you have used and would recommend?
Also, what should I expect to spend?

Thanks
