yeah very interesting article, but here is my question:

How does google or any search engine know that I actually paid to have my link on a site?? How on earth would they know I paid Joe bob franks supercool poker page 25 bucks to have a text link on their site?

To take it further, how do they know that a courtesy link from a friend of mine who runs a pr7 website gave me a link free of charge while everyone else who is on his page pays for the links?

Words that surround the link such as "Advertisments" "Partners" or "Sponsors" will set off a red alarm to Google letting them know that you paid for the ad. Also if your link is on every single page.

I really don't see how as an affiliate, buying links on other sites can be a bad thing. Buying links is twofold, one for SEO and another for driving traffic to your site. A nicely placed link on another webmasters' site is a great way to drive traffic to your site. If Google penalizes webmasters for wanting to advertise their site, I think that's wrong. They should just devalue links in general if they are so concerned.

It's like if the Yellow Pages would say to a local ice cream store, if you put a flyer up in another local ice cream store, we'll move your listing to the back of the yellow pages, under washing machines..

And did you pay that webmaster individually? Or do you buy links in bulk for X amount of dollars?

Then my other question is where do you buy links?
