Graham, you have raised good points. Our initial risk was, will players download it and use it? I guess we passed this already as we have almost 10,000 players downloading and using the tool and we do see conversions to players.
Why did they download it? I can give you a list of reasons:

as for the commission, well, we are no different then any other property. If you can bring players, you can enhance your commission (we have affiliates that gets much more than what is on the site) - I hope it makes sense...
Anyway our idea was very simple. Let affiliates worry on bringing the players to make them their own (branded) 'users' and let us worry on dealing with tens of properties, collecting information etc'.
We have already 350 affilates in our affiliate program and many of them send high volume of players, which brings them results.

we did have in september a promotion of $2.00 per user in addition to the affiliate commission, it worked great, we had affiliates starting to work with us and see results very fast
