Easy answer, for the BackLinks
www.TournamentMonitor.com has a similar service for Webmasters and the online tournament feed has an embeded link with the anchor text "Poker Tournaments" and hyperlink set to tournamentmonitor.com . If you do a google search for "Poker Tournaments" you will see that they rank #4. Which is pretty damn good in my opinion.
Although the service is free its not like they won't be compensated, they are compensated by hundreds, if not thousands of one way backlinks wich will target whatever keywords they choose.
How much is a top 5 listing on Google worth? My guess is a bundle.
Provide the services and options affiliates want, and the service becomes more popular. The more popular it is the higher ranking on Google. The higher the ranking, the more money they will make from search engine traffic.
