Default Ranking in SERP's

Hittail threw out a suggested hit to me for a suggested hit and it is quite the competitive phrase. So I took a look through google to see where I am. I am on the 8th page right now. I have made no effort to bother with this term because I didnt think I would make it any where near the first page.

With alot of effort, could I move from page 8 to even the 2nd page for a highly competitive key phrase? Is it possible?

Sure it's possible. A lot of people advise newbies to target small niches that are easily achievable, but there is absolutely nothing wrong with trying to rank for stuff like "poker" or "online poker" too.

You can rank for niche terms and popular terms. You just have to do the work.

Hmmm, interesting. This could turn into a little experiment for me. A couple others showed up and I am in top 10 pages to so it would be very interesting to see how all this can work with a term that is a little more competitive.

The work and effort thats not a problem

You shouldn't be afraid to go after the big terms. But you just have to have the resources and the cash to actually go after them. They are attainable, but you have to be willing to put in a lot of time and either pay for or get a ton of incoming links in some way from quality and authority sites......not to mention daily updated content.

Essentially you have to become an authority yourself to rank on the first page for a competitive term.

I go after the big terms such as "online casinos" but also niche terms its always good to have your finger in the popular keyword pie so that a few years down the line when you stand a better chance of ranking well for these you can. To many people are put off trying to rank for the popular terms so the big guys at the top have no rivals its good to compete for this to, with enough work and alot of time theres no reason its impossible.

whats been said is true but there really is no point in going after terms like online poker, poker, casino and online casino unless you spend a minimun of $10k a month on links etc

to get top 3 for poker, casino and online poker i bet you could spend $50k a month and still not get a top 3 ranking.

After all rand fishken (one of the top seo's in the world) was offered $10 million to get a poker room to no.1 for the term "poker" - did he try ? Nope !

Even pokerlistings cant get there and they are the only portal ranking page 1 on Google (apart from poker.com but thats a $25 million domain name, so doesnt count lol ) for "online poker" and "poker" and im sure their monthly budget is in the xxx, xxx.xx range

I agree with you Darko and it would be totally pointless to do that. When mentioned competitive I didn't mean that competitive. But I am going to take a stab at it and I would be happy with being even on the top of the second page for.............. now

You can guarantee yourself 1 thing by NOT going after terms like online poker, poker, casino, and online casino. You'll never rank for any of those phrases. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

I did the SEO for a site that ranks and ranked in the top 10 for "poker", "online poker", and "texas holdem", and I don't think a huge linkbuying budget is necessary to rank for those phrases. I also rank for 1 word phrases like "craps", "roulette", "blackjack", and "video poker", and I guarantee yo I don't spend anywhere near $10,000/month on any kind fo advertising.

It's a long term project, and it's a difficult project, but to say it's impossible unless you have a huge budget is just untrue.

And even if you never rank in the top 3 for 1 of those phrases, there is a LOT of traffic to be had in spots 4 through 10 for those phrases.

Rand Fishkin also said that you couldn't compete for phrases like that without using black hat seo techniques, which is just completely false. Most mainstream SEO's don't understand the gambling SEO industry at all. Many of them will admit it.

Here is Rand's post about online poker being too competitive for white hat SEO. What he actually says is, "I stood out from the crowd (and got a few chuckles from my fellow panelists) when I suggested that it might be possible to use only white hat methods - linkbaiting, viral marketing, building a better site, etc. - to rank for these terms. Luckily, none of my colleagues pointed out that while all of them had done work in this arena and, at one time or another, had clients ranking for these phrases, I never had."
