Seasonal Poker Content Ideas How to tailor your content to the time of year, and why it's a good idea. Poker Content Ideas
A fellow member of PAW sent me an instant message this morning asking for ideas for his poker blog. Said he was stuck and had writers' block. I always get puzzled about requests like this, because I have far more ideas for content and articles than I have time or energy to write about them. And one of the great things about being an affiliate in this industry is that the number of potential topics is far greater than in most.
After all, there are famous poker players all over the place, and there are celebrities trying to become poker celebrities. Every one of those people is a potential article subject, or a blog post subject
Content for New Years
I got an email from the editor of http://ezinearticles.com/ today with some suggestions for how to tailor some articles to the time of year. These are general suggestions he sent out, but they would apply to any niche:
- Past Year Trends - One of the easiest and possibly most interesting articles you could write could be an overview of poker in 2005, or to be even more specific, an overview of online poker in 2005, or to be still more specific, an overview of what happened at Party Poker in 2005. Titles for this kind of content are easy too: "Party Poker 2005 - The Year in Review".
- Predictions - What will 2006 bring to the poker industry? What will 2006 bring to the online poker industry? What will 2006 bring to SunPoker.com?
- Resolutions - What kind of resolutions are you making as a poker player? What kind of resolutions are you making as a poker blogger? What kind of resolutions are you making as a poker webmaster?
- Goals - This is slightly different from resolutions, because it's often more outcome based. How much money are you going to win in poker tournaments this year? How much money are you going to make as a poker affiliate in 2006? How much traffic do you want to receive as a website in 2006?
All of the above would be appropriate for almost any kind of poker website, and all of those ideas are specific to this time of year. Some of the more interesting topics, for me, are the ones about your goals as an affiliate webmaster. A lot of webmasters keep the subject of how they do business and how they make money a big secret; I don't think this is necessary. In fact, I think transparency builds trust. Sharing with the people who visit your site that you have a goal of getting 150,000 unique visitors to your website in 2006 gives your readers something to root for you on, and who knows, they might even help you try to reach your goals.
Content for Other Seasons
New Years isn't the only time of year that can inspire specific content ideas. I just finished writing some articles about gift ideas for poker players at Christmas time. That would also be appropriate during Valentines Day.
Historical holidays like Memorial Day, Presidents Day, or the 4th of July would be a perfect time to write an article about presidents who played poker. Richard Nixon earned the money for his first political campaign by playing poker.
Halloween coming up soon? How about an article about how to put together 5 costumes based on real life poker players this year? The Phil Hellmuth costume might include sunglasses, a Phil Hellmuth brand windbreaker, and some elevator shoes if you're short.
Some of these examples are silly, and some of them are foolish, and some of them might not even make very good article topics. But they're all examples of how to be a little bit creative and get some ideas for poker content. |
